What You Need Before You Can Work

Healthcare staffing requires more than submitting an application.

Before you can be considered for appropriate assignments with Veterans Healthcare Staffing UK, we need to complete the recruitment, identity, employment, safeguarding, training and professional checks relevant to your role and location.

Core Compliance Requirements

Depending on your role and jurisdiction, you may be required to provide:

  • Proof of Identity
  • Right to Work
  • Address Evidence
  • Employment History
  • References
  • Criminal Record / Background Checks
  • Qualifications
  • Training Certificates
  • Competency Evidence
  • Professional Registration

Requirements may differ between England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey.

Identity & Right to Work

We must be satisfied that you are who you say you are and that you have the appropriate legal right to undertake the work being offered.

Relevant documentation will be checked as part of recruitment and compliance.

Employment History

You will be asked to provide a clear employment history.

Any gaps, inconsistencies or unexplained periods may need to be discussed and satisfactorily clarified as part of our safer recruitment process.

References

Appropriate references will be obtained to help verify your:

  • Employment
  • Experience
  • Conduct
  • Suitability for the Role

The number and type of references required may depend on the role, employment history, client requirements and applicable standards.

Criminal Record & Safeguarding Checks

Healthcare roles may require an appropriate criminal-record or safeguarding check.

In England and Wales this may include an Enhanced DBS and, where legally applicable to the role, the relevant barred-list check.

Different arrangements apply in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey, so the appropriate jurisdiction-specific checks will be used.

Qualifications

Where a role requires a particular qualification, we may verify the qualification and request supporting evidence.

Applicants must not undertake duties for which they are not appropriately qualified, trained or competent.

Training

Training requirements depend on the role, setting and assignment and may include:

  • Safeguarding
  • Basic Life Support / First Aid
  • Moving & Handling
  • Infection Prevention & Control
  • Medication
  • Mental Capacity
  • Equality, Diversity & Human Rights
  • Communication
  • Lone Working

Additional training may be required for particular clients or specialist assignments.

Competency

A training certificate alone does not automatically demonstrate competence.

Where specific skills are required, we may need evidence that you have the appropriate knowledge, experience and practical competency for the assignment.

Complex care competencies may include:

  • Tracheostomy & Suctioning
  • Ventilation / NIV
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • PEG / Enteral Feeding
  • Seizure Management
  • Diabetes Care
  • Catheter Care
  • Bowel & Stoma Care
  • Medication
  • Palliative & End-of-Life Care

Registered Nurses

Registered Nurses must hold appropriate professional registration.

For nurses, we will verify relevant NMC registration and consider any information relevant to the person’s ability to undertake the proposed assignment.

This applies to:

Role & Assignment-Specific Requirements

Being compliant for one assignment does not necessarily mean you are suitable for every assignment.

Additional requirements may arise because of:

  • Client Requirements
  • Care Setting
  • Service User Needs
  • Specialist Competencies
  • Safeguarding Requirements
  • Professional Scope of Practice
  • Local or Jurisdictional Requirements

We will consider these before matching you to an assignment.

Keeping Your Compliance Up to Date

Workers are responsible for providing accurate information and informing us of relevant changes.

Documents, registrations, training and other time-limited requirements must remain current where required for the role or assignment.

The Staff Hub will help existing workers access and manage relevant compliance information.

Your Responsibility

You must tell us promptly about information that could affect your suitability or eligibility for work, including relevant changes to:

  • Right to Work
  • Professional Registration
  • Criminal Record / Safeguarding Status
  • Health or Fitness to Practise Where Relevant
  • Qualifications
  • Training
  • Competency
  • Restrictions Affecting Your Work

Good compliance is not simply about collecting documents.

It helps protect the people receiving care, our workers, our clients and the organisations in which our staff work.

Throughout recruitment and matching, we apply our MUM Test:

“Would I trust this person with my own mum?”
